The Smashing Pumpkins, with “ATUM”, presented yet another concept in their music and strengthened their previous concept. This album is supposed to be the updated version of the band’s “Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness,” and it has a consistent concept of science-fiction storyline. Billy Corgan is also very effective on the songwriting front, with various tracks recording such as Emma, Empires, and Beguiled being pleasing to the ears and telling stories of hope and despair all at once. The work is filled with brass and strings, and the orchestral elements of this album are rich and harmonious, which perfectly fits the themes given and the overall essence of the discography. It is, therefore, refreshing that with ATUM, the band has demonstrated that not only has its creative spirit continued to thrive but that it pays its homage to its origins as well.
