Sean MacLeod – I've Seen You Around

Sean MacLeod's first track for an interesting new chapter, “I've Seen You Around,” feels like entering a different sound altogether. While listening, it seems as though he is following his curiosity, not what people expect. He blends the old with the new, the vintage with the contemporary, in a seamless, natural, and fresh manner.

The sound of the lyre is used throughout the arrangement and centres on the song. It adds a kind of texture to the track that feels distinctive within indie pop. Modern production fits around it naturally. The old and the new play together seamlessly, resulting in a sound that is both relaxed, balanced and subtly adventurous.

The tune also has a large role to play in the mood of the song. Instead of the modern tuning system used in music, Sean constructed the track around an old mathematical tuning system. The distinction is quite apparent. The notes are clear and bright, creating a peaceful and thought-provoking ambiance that gradually draws you in with each passing moment.

It's a mood that is very fitting for Sean's voice. He sings with relaxed, dreamlike ease; rather than seeking the spotlight, he allows his voice to soar over the music. All the options seem well thought out. It sure does for someone that has been studying and making music for years. His ability as a historian of popular music is clearly influencing his approach to sound; every choice is a part of a larger idea.

With the first single from his upcoming album "We Don't See That We Don't See," I've Seen You Around, it gives a good idea of what's to come next. It's like the beginning of a project that's eager to take chances with its sound and form. The song draws from the past for ideas while moving forward. The arrangement slowly opens up as it goes, with new details appearing each time you listen. It's a considered and patiently absorbing piece to be savoured and enjoyed again.
