The New Citizen Kane – metalLIC

The New Citizen Kane has been creating his own world for years, and maybe “metaLLIC” is the best glimpse into it so far. Hearing it, it feels like an artist finally giving up control and relying on intuition. It is this change that gives the track its charge.

The production feels like the real deal. A broad, luminous soundscape of electronics hangs over it, never overpowering. Everything fits together so well that it feels like it's meant to be because you know what mood it's going for.

The vocal performance remains laid back and relaxed, keeping the listener with it throughout the song and not overwhelming them. It has a closeness to it, as if someone's talking to you late at night, which fits the song's theme of letting go of overthinking and staying present in the moment.

“metaLLIC” is, at its heart, about surrender. Kane has been open about its composition during a time when he was choosing feeling over analysis, and it's clear in every aspect of the arrangement. It never rushes. It allows the mood to develop naturally, just like the release that the lyrics speak of.

The visuals accompanying the song add to that world, in keeping with the song's precision and emotion. They help tell the full story. The track is part of the Free To Feel EP, which is the first installment in Kane's larger Psychedelika Pt.2 project, and does a good job of getting that project started.

“metaLLIC” is a bold, personal move for Kane, one that is grounded in truth, not image. It establishes a good pace for the rest of the project and is the sort of song that pays off during a late-night listening session at full volume. You can easily see this becoming one of those songs you keep coming back to late at night.
