Fiona Amaka – Anyway you come

Any Way You Come by Fiona Amaka is centered on one of the most difficult emotions one may experience – fear of losing the person before they are ready to lose you. The singer-songwriter, who hails from London, penned the track when her mother's health took a sudden turn for the worse, with the weight being right in the middle of each line in the song.

Musically it remains very close and simple. Here Fiona is using her background as a singer songwriter, using only guitar and voice to convey the feelings without making an elaborate production of it. The restraint is appropriate for the subject and allows the listener to absorb the words.

The song's main focus is on her voice. A characteristic of her voice is that it sounds lived-in, as if she was singing from a lived experience instead of imagination. She doesn't try to do too much with the emotion. On the contrary, it's more natural and somehow it has a deeper impact. Every line is well formed and understood.

The song is unique because of its candidness in the expression of unconditional love. It's not a matter of wishing somebody would change or stay the same. That it is okay to take a different version of a person, even if it is different, just to keep them close for a little bit longer. It's not a simple concept to articulate, but Fiona manages to do so with cool simplicity.

Any Way You Come, though recorded a couple of years ago, still has a lot of listeners from chance, such as through playlists and word of mouth. That seems like a wasted opportunity. It's the sort of song that penetrates softly and reaches out to people when they need it.

Fiona's recent music has been quite varied from rock influenced tunes to more gentle folk music. Any Way You Come is possibly her most subdued impactful song to date. It's as though it's a song that needs a lot more ears, and a lot more sitting.
