Listening to Turnstile’s “GLOW ON”, there is acute frustration resulting from attempts at pinning down the band’s music to specific genre. In regard to their previous albums, this record takes rock as far as it can go while touching the borders of punk, pop, and even hip-hop. Featuring Blood Orange, the band feels full of energy, with an interesting audio color that does not fade but resigns. These quieter songs like “Alien Love Call” offers a romantic view of the track that balances an abundance of guitar and an eloquent spoken word by Dev Hynes. The record ends with ‘Lonely Desires’, which really merges Green Day’ style and My Bloody Valentine’s sound, to leave the listener with a sense of intensity and healthy complexity. Perhaps turnstile continues to reinvent what a rock band can be and so ‘GLOW ON’ is a quite enjoyable listen for anyone in search of something original.
