Sob Rock is John Mayer’s latest creation that brings together soft rock of the 70s and 80s with the musician’s guitar skills. This album could be said to capture Mayer’s sentimentalism and great song-writing ability as he illustrates themes of break-ups and yearning. Songs such as “Last Train Home” are good examples of how he manages to compose catchy tunes at the same time as write meaningful lyrics. The sound is well-finished but not too sleek to sound too sterile, and even though it is not a yacht rock, the influence can be heard with a twist.
